waterkiosk +

Over the last 20 years, the capital of Mongolia Ulaanbaatar witnessed an unprecedented urbanization. Nomadic families from the rural provinces of the country poured into the city and created so called Ger (Yurt) Settlements. Even though these settlements are housing 60% of Ulan Bator’s population today, basic infrastructure like running water or electricity are lacking in many places.

550 Water kiosks in Ulaanbaatar provide the ger areas with water and have become everyday points of encounter in the settlement. The waterkiosk + project is based on an intense research on the potentials of the kiosks and has a two-fold goal: First to facilitate the water collection process itself by improving the surrounding surface, that was formerly part of the dusty access lanes system. Second to take advantage of the daily routine and create a gathering point and public space for the inhabitants of the settlement.

The project waterkiosk + as realized in Yarmag 5th Khoroo, is a prototype based on the research and design of the NOMAD CITY Summer School and Seminar at Technische Universität Berlin in cooperation with the Mongolian University of Science and Technology and participation in the WELTSTADT Exhibition.
