Lesedi

Lesedi is the 2018-2019 project for the University of Nottingham design+build studio creche initiative.  Lesedi is a 500 square meter collection of buildings designed by second year architecture students as part of their RIBA validated course.  Students work to requirements set by the South African Department of Social Development, to meet requirements set out by our collaborator the Thusanang Trust in order to meet the needs of the teachers, families, and children enrolled at Lesedi for Early Childhood Development.  Over four weeks in April 2019 students from the design studio, joined by RIBA part 2 students from Nottingham and a collection of architects, engineers and technicians from the University, constructed the building and worked with Lesedi’s head teacher to finish the classrooms.  Construction work completed in April 2019, and the studio lead has returned to Lesedi twice to support the teaching team in maintaining the building, and continuing to develop the relationship with Thusanang Trust to support the creche in providing high quality ECD.
