Participatory Design of Outdoor Play Area in a Children Center, in one of Cairo's Informal Areas

Due to the lack of resources, the center's priority is always to the indoor spaces that are used for educational facilities for children. Investigation showed that psychologically, children needed a colorful play area, and some energetic toys such as monkey bars, swings, trampoline, and so on.

the students have undergone a complete participatory action research approach: starting by the theoretical background, site exploration, planning the scenario and designing the tools of their empirical study, observation and recording, investigation, identifying the design problem, developing the design guide lines, participatory design work shops on site, budget planning, fund raising, evaluation of alternatives, and implementation.

Technical Description

The ground had to be prepared for implanting natural grass, the corrugated tin walls needed to be treated. The wooden swings needed to be experimented for the weights and safety before fixing. Then there were several ground toys made from tires and ropes.
