KITCHEN-HUB
The KITCHEN-HUB is a multifuncional kitchen space in Berlin-Schöneberg run by the organisation Über den Tellerrand e.V.. During the five weeks of the summer school a detailed usage concept for the space was developed together with the organisation, first pieces were then designed and built at Technische Universität Berlin. The core team consisted of an interdisciplinary group of students, refugees, volunteers and craftsmen.
The KITCHEN-HUB aims to become a space of coexistence and mutual exchange, where refugees are not only welcome but become active in shaping urban space.. Here people with refugee and non-refugee background cook, eat, work and think together.
The summer school was funded by the STO-Stiftung. It built on the experiences and outcomes of the design studio Refugees in the City: cooking with refugees in Berlin at Habitat Unit of the summer term 2015.
Technical Description
The table and chair modules consist of a welded metall steel construction, the table plates, cooking boxes and chair boxes are made from multiplex wood panels with glued joints.

KITCHEN-HUB Kickoff
The research- and teaching format ‚Refugees in the City‘ deals with the ongoing debate on accommodating refugees and asylum seekers worldwide. In particular we are seeking to understand and determine the role of planning disciplines in the process. The accompanying lecture series aims to initiate a discussion about a possible collaboration between higher education, research, refugee initiatives and civil society.
Case studies and best practice examples of studio work at schools of higher education and practice will be presented and discussed. Afterwards the speakers and the audience will prepare a small meal together on
a long table in order to deeper discuss the related topics.
The event will take place in the framework of the 2nd Cluster Meeting of the Urban Lab+.
